A sublimely expressive heddle pulley from the Guro of the Ivory Coast. The half closed eyes and large circular mouth with teeth and tongue showing give this face an emotional quality that is nearly spiritual. It suggests a singer perhaps of the Gyè cult, known amongst the neighboring tribes. Possessing a very fine encrusted patina, it measures 6-1/8" in height. #9113 Price on request. Contact Provenance: Ohly, London, 1962, Ex collection Peter and Veena Shnell, Zürich Exhibited and published: Die
kunst der Guro, Elfenbeinkunste by Eberhard Fischer and Lorenz
Homberger. Rietberg Museum, Zürich 11 May - 13 October, 1985, no.105.
