Apothecary vessel
Mangbetu People, D.R. Congo
Terracotta
6" (15.2 cm) high by 3" (10 cm) wide
Early to mid 20th century
Ex. William Siegmann collection
It is common for vessels from the Mangbetu to have figurative elements; much more unusual for them to be of geometric design. This one has incised bands on the neck and four ovoid cartouches filled with a diamond pattern on the low bulbous body. There is some wear and four perforations at the rim for suspension. See Burssens, Mangbetu, African Court Art from Belgian Private Collections, 1992, 74, 49 and 50.
