Shaman figure
Coclé culture, Panama
Earthenware
16 1/8" (41.2 cm) high
1000-1200 A.D.

Dark brown on tan slip-painted earthenware with touches of red on ears and mouth. A human figure with boldly painted cylindrical body (possibly representing a jaguar's skin) crouches on highly stylized skid-like legs with arms raised holding an implement; the face has a birdlike beak and wide grin; a single plait of hair extends down the back. The arms and the implement were broken and reattached, and there has been additional substantial expert restoration.
Ex. private collection, Iowa, ex. Sotheby's, New York, Pre-Columbian Art, May 19, 1992, lot 266.
