A splendid Boy’s Day banner from Japan, this one-of-a-kind painting is especially clear and graphic. Boy’s Day occurs on May 5th of each year, and banners like this were commissioned by the maternal grandparents as a gift to a grandson to inspire the manly characteristics portrayed by the Samurai depicted. This one shows two Samuari and one muscular horse, all ready for battle. The family crest or mon at the top of the banner is that of the crossed feathers, Takanoha, which commemorates a particular military branch of one of Japan’s ruling families. The signature at the bottom is that of the artist. It measures 17’8” long and is 27” wide. Late 19th century Meiji Period, 1865-1912.  #8013  $2200
