Hanuman, the monkey god
India
Lost wax cast bronze
2.75" (7 cm) high
16th century
#8230

Hanuman, known also as Anjaneya, is one of the most important personalities in the epic Ramayana. He accompanied his master, Lord Rama, an avatar of Vishnu, in the war against Ravana, the demon king of Lanka (Ceylon). He is depicted standing with hands in anjali mudra, the gesture of total devotion, which Hanuman personifies. His tail gracefully arches over his head and his face shows considerable softness from centuries of ritual puja use, from which remains a bit of the pink substance around his neck. It is a solid piece with more copper content than most of these small bronzes.
