Asian Tribal Art - Hanya mask, Japan

This carved wood Hanya mask is from Japan. This character from the Noh theatre is that of a beautiful woman who fell in love with a priest. Her jealousy and rage at his lack of interest turns her into a demon with a red face and fangs. The Hanya has become a good luck mask used to scare away evil spirits. This one has remnants of red lacquer on the face, gilding on the fangs and black lacquer on the horns. It measures 13” high by 12” wide and is mounted on a custom base. Edo period.  #8059  SOLD
