Skull and serpent sterling match safe

Match safe
Unknown manufacturer
Sterling silver
2.5" (6.3 cm) high
c. 1895
This rare match safe is marked STERLING and has a pinched striker on the bottom. A serpent winds through a dapper skull's eye sockets, mouth, ears and chin - unusual imagery for a match safe, though I have seen a few that portray serpents without a skull. The lid is secure and snaps closed.
