Indonesian Tribal Art - Shrine figures, Anadeo, Central Flores

 

An ancestral couple, called Anadeo, from either the Nage or Ngadha regions of Central Flores. Typically, these are the revered mythical clan founders, often depicted in their male/female duality.  In Flores, they are often seated figures on a pole, positioned in front of (or next to) the ancestral shrine.
 
In this case, the clan founders are shown seated, flanking a miniature model of the ancestral shrine. This whole compilation might itself have been placed on a pole in front of the real ancestral shrine. On the reverse, there are some aquatic creatures representing the underworld - please see photos below. It measures 14" wide by 17" high. 19th century.  #5713  $2200
