Haku Maki (1924-2000)
Ox, 1962
Woodblock print
Image: 17-1/16 by 11 inches
Sheet: 19 by 12-5/8 inches
Edition: 314/510
Signed: in pencil, Haku Maki, two seals in red

This strong, forceful print was published as a tipped-in print inthe 1962 book, The Modern Japanese Print: An Appreciation, by James A. Michener. Titled and numbered 306/510 in the lower left margin, and signed Haku Maki in the lower right margin, it is printed on kozo paper. There are two printed seals on the print, lower left and upper right, which Maki stated were an integral part of the overall composition.

The subtle transaparency of the ink is clearly seen as the solid black vertical form overlaps the more textured horizontal shapes exhibiting Maki's masterful use of the various woodblock surfaces to add visual interest. The image is inspired by a rarely seen kanji for ox, ushi.
