Cassowary feather ornament
Papua New Guinea
Cassowary feathers, resin, fine wire, Job's tears, small bone, mica
Mid-20th century
16" (40.6 cm) high
This cassowary feather ornament has six segments of feathers; two on the sides with no ornamentation and four in the center with Job's tear seeds and chips of mica embedded in a natural resinous substance. There are two additional small bird feathers tied onto the cassowary feathers, as is visible in the top photo. Presumably, the piece would be stuck in place with the small carved bone piece. It's in great condition with clean feathers; it is not based.
