Dugong net float
Massim culture, Eastern Suau Island, Papua New Guinea
Wood
Early-mid 20th century

6" (15.2 cm) high
This buoyant float would have held the side of a net used to catch dugong. A face can be seen in the center, an expression of the magical qualities associated with carved net floats such as this. Published in Michael Hamson's Art of Massim and Collingwood Bay, 2009, p 133. Field collected by Adel Abel in 2007.
